Top 10 Budget-Friendly Destinations for American Travelers in 2024-min

Planning a vacation on a tight budget? No worries! We’ve compiled a list of the cheapest countries to visit, whether you’re traveling solo or with family. Even with inflation affecting everything from groceries to electric vehicles, there are still plenty of destinations where your dollar goes a long way, offering you an exotic experience for less than you might expect.

Our list ranks countries based on their estimated daily costs, including accommodation and meals for one person. We’ve excluded airfare since flight prices fluctuate depending on factors like the time of year, departure location, and destination. However, if you’re looking to save on flights to Europe, we’ve got tips for that too.

To inspire your travel plans, here are 10 of the most affordable countries to visit in 2024.

10 Portugal

  • Average daily cost: $149
  • Accommodation (per person): $64
  • Meals (per day): $44

Portugal offers some of the best value in Europe. Famous for its fresh seafood, world-class wine, stunning coastal views, and iconic custard tarts (pastéis de nata), it’s a traveler’s delight. With over 300 days of sunshine, you can explore vibrant Lisbon, relax on the southern beaches, or enjoy a wine and port tour in Porto—all while keeping your vacation affordable in this welcoming southern European country.

The Cost of Travel in Portugal: My 2024 Budget Breakdown

Portugal is easily one of Europe’s most captivating countries. In fact, it only took me two days during my first visit in 2016 to decide I wanted to call it home. After arriving in Lisbon, I quickly fell in love with the city, and within a month, I had found an apartment and made the move.

Portugal has everything: an underrated food scene, friendly locals, stunning architecture, and fantastic weather. Although it used to fly under the radar compared to its neighbors like Italy, Spain, and France, it’s now gaining the recognition it deserves. While tourism has driven some prices up, especially post-pandemic, Portugal remains one of the most affordable destinations in Western Europe—especially if you venture beyond Lisbon and Porto.

Since 2011, I’ve tracked every expense during my travels, offering over 65 budget breakdowns from countries around the world. Today, I’m excited to share the cost of traveling through Portugal in 2024.

The Cost of Accommodation in Portugal

When it comes to accommodation, it’s possible to reduce your costs significantly if you’re open to alternatives. For example, housesitting is a great option in Portugal, allowing you to stay for free while taking care of someone’s home and often their pets. This works best for long-term travelers who can be flexible with their dates and locations.

However, if you prefer more traditional options, Portugal offers a wide range of accommodations at reasonable prices. Hostels are abundant across the country, offering dorm beds in Lisbon for around €25 a night, and premium hostels for €35. Private rooms in hostels are also a great option, ranging from €50 to €100 per night, depending on the location and quality.

For mid-range hotels, expect to pay between €50-100 per night in central locations. While Airbnb is popular, particularly in Lisbon, its rise has driven up housing prices, pushing out locals and making it harder to find affordable long-term stays. To support the local community, consider staying at hotels or hostels instead.

Recommended Places to Stay in Portugal:

  • Lisbon: For a central and scenic experience, stay within a 20-minute walk of the Time Out Market. In Principe Real, try Toctoctoc Lisboa, a boutique hotel with garden views (€225/night).
  • Porto: Republica 157 Guest House is a quiet, well-located option at €95 per night.
  • Coimbra: Sapientia Boutique Hotel (€188/night) offers a literary-themed stay with exceptional service.
  • Evora: Pousada Convento de Evora (€216/night), a former monastery, provides a romantic and historic experience.

9. Dominican Republic

  • Average daily cost: $146
  • Accommodation cost for one person: $89
  • Daily meals cost: $39

Just a short two-hour flight from Miami and under four hours from New York City, the Dominican Republic is a popular Caribbean destination for American travelers. Sharing the island of Hispaniola with Haiti, this Spanish-speaking country offers beautiful white sand beaches, lush lagoons, and vibrant rainforests. With year-round sunshine and stunning natural beauty, it’s an affordable and accessible tropical escape.

Cost of Traveling to the Dominican Republic

On average, plan to spend around $146 (RD$8,671) per day during your vacation in the Dominican Republic. Here’s a breakdown of typical daily expenses based on past travelers’ experiences:

  • Meals: $39 (RD$2,300)
  • Local transportation: $11 (RD$654)
  • Hotels: $178 (RD$10,586)

A one-week trip for two people will cost approximately $2,038 (RD$121,387), which covers accommodation, meals, local transportation, and sightseeing. These estimates, based on real travelers’ data, provide a guide for budgeting your trip.

Cost of a Trip to the Dominican Republic: 1 Week, 2 Weeks, or 1 Month

A trip to the Dominican Republic offers an affordable yet enriching experience. Here’s a breakdown of the estimated costs based on duration and travelers:

  • 1 Week: Expect to spend around $1,019 (RD$60,694) for one person and $2,038 (RD$121,387) for two people. This covers accommodation, food, local transportation, and sightseeing.

Independent Travel: Traveling independently in the Dominican Republic is both affordable and flexible. For example:

  • Accommodation: The average daily cost for one person is $89 (RD$5,293), and for two sharing a room, it’s $178 (RD$10,586).

Is the Dominican Republic Expensive? Compared to other Caribbean islands, the Dominican Republic is moderately priced. It’s more affordable than places like Barbados, but still offers great value for a Caribbean destination.

Ultimately, costs vary based on travel style and pace, with family trips often being cheaper per person due to shared accommodations and children’s discounts.
